Toothpick Appetizer Tips for Success

Like I said before, there are a million different combinations you can bring together to create beautiful and delicious appetizers for your next party, but here are 4 simple rules to follow:

  • Use sturdy toothpicks or cocktail picks: Don’t get anything that will break during your party.
  • Keep combos simple: 2–3 ingredients max: It’s a small stick! Don’t try to get overly fancy. Sticking with a few ingredients that create a burst of flavor is all you need.
  • Choose colorful ingredients for visual appeal: The eyes usually eat before the mouth does. Having visually appealing colors work in harmony will pull your guests in with interest!
  • Plate them nicely: I remember Barefoot Contessa once saying that food always looks better against a white background. From that moment on, I was hooked. Almost all of my serving dishes are white. You can also use fresh herbs or fruit to garnish the plate.

  • Caprese Skewers (mozzarella, cherry tomato, basil)- Easy peasy. Grab mozzarella balls, cherry tomatoes, and basil. I like to drizzle balsamic glaze over them.
  • Ham and Cheese Bites (rolled and pinned)- Self-explanatory, I know. Put out a side of honey mustard for dipping.
  • Mini Meatballs with BBQ sauce- a crowd favorite. There are easy Crockpot recipes for this all over. By setting them up with toothpicks, you’re making it easier to serve your guests.
  • Turkey, brie, and Grannysmith apple- A delicious combination! The salty brie combined with the sweet and tart apple is delicious. Serve with honey mustard!
  • Watermelon, Mint, and Feta- A classic combination of sweet and salt.
  • Mini Mozzarella, meatballs with marinara- sprinkle a little parmesan and parsley.
  • Charcuterie sticks: Grab salami, pepperoni, and cheddar. Top it off with a grape for your guests to eat while socializing.
  • Cheddar and Apple Cubes- The tartness of a Granny Smith works so well with cheddar.
  • Tortellini and Pepperoni Skewers- Serve with a pesto, and it'll be a hit.
  • Salami, Olive, and Cheese Stack- This is a winner for the salty lovers!
  • Proscuitto and Fig- Who doesn't love sweet and salty coming together? Cut the fig in half and nestle it in proscuitto.
  • Grape, Brie, and Prosciutto- If you don't like brie, try a sharp cheddar.

How to Display and Serve

As a rule, presenting food on white platters makes the food look better. Since it’s not competing with any print, it highlights the colors of your appetizer. Using long rectangular platters is also a nice way to showcase your toothpick appetizers. Tiered stands are another great option because it takes up less real estate in your presentation while also providing height.

If you plan on making a few different options, let your guests know what they’re choosing with little labels in front.

If you know that it should be served cold, try placing your tray over ice to maintain the proper temperature of your appetizer.

Make-Ahead and Storage Tips

When hosting a bigger event, there is so much to do the day of your party. When you know this, try to plan for anything that can be made the day before.

Even if assembly needs to take place that day, do all of your preparation the day before. This includes cleaning your fruit and vegetables. Cutting anything necessary to size. This can take an hour or more (depending on the size of your gathering).

Store your prepared foods in airtight containers and place damp paper towels over anything that may dry out. With carrots, celery, or anything hearty, you can also put them in water to keep them fresh.

While it makes life easier to assemble everything in advance, be thoughtful in when you choose to do this. If you have anything served warm or with a bread, it may get soggy.

Don’t wait until the day of your event to think these things through. You may find yourself overwhelmed and underprepared.

Celebrate with Your Guests

The reason so many people like toothpick appetizers is because they give the host the chance to set it up and be part of the fun. This is perfect for the working mom who also wants to enjoy her time with family and friends.

Simply choose a few options that you think your guests will love and get to having a great time with those you love.
