Foundational Elements

Some quick foundational element changes can have a huge impact when creating your fall theme. The best part is that you can reuse these elements yearly if you keep your choices neutral.

Doormats and rugs: Porch designers have loved layering rugs for a few years now, and I don’t see this year being any different. Plaid or stripes, straight lines or scallops, place a softer rug underneath, then lay a doormat on top of it. It adds style and dimension.

Try a layering rug like the one from Safavieh below.

Throw pillows: A quick way to update your porch for the season is to switch the throw pillows on your chairs to a fall color scheme and design. If you’re trying to save money, you may be able to throw a pillow cover over your existing insert. Inserts can get expensive.

Blanket: Layer in an inexpensive blanket. It’ll be perfect to drape across your lap on those cool mornings, and it adds texture and color to your design.

Natural Fall Accents

Fall is all about the pumpkins! Using a variety of sizes and colors, you can layer in nature’s beauty inexpensively.

If you want the pumpkins to last a long time, consider getting fake pumpkins. I know the squirrels love to eat ours, and faux pumpkins help you avoid that.

Flowers and plants celebrate the fall with the gorgeous colors that flowers like mums come in. Choose two to three colors and, using a variety of different sized pots and plants to fill in your design.

Other great additions like corn stalks or hay bales are perfect if you want to make it a little more rustic. They last a long time and are pretty inexpensive.

Color Schemes That Work

Websites like this one can help you determine your color scheme. Let it work with your house color. If you are looking to change it up yearly, look at fashion. Nearly every store I’ve been in this year is using cranberry and plum in their clothing. Use this year's color to inspire your choices.

If you’re looking to save money, create a basic color palette in your more expensive decorative items and use the season’s trend colors in the flowers.

Budget-Friendly Shopping Tips

Some of the best places to find affordable fall decor include Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and HomeGoods. Big box stores like Target and Walmart also offer really great selections.

I love going to Costco to look at their autumn flowers because they offer a gorgeous selection and are inexpensive. That isn’t the only place I’ve gone for plants! Whole Foods and Lidl are other great places to look for autumn plants.

Whole Foods has gorgeous flowers that are not expensive.

If you’re on a steep budget, see what you can gather from nature to help create your fall entry. Trim off some evergreen branches and use those in your decor!

Nature is what you’re celebrating anyway, so it makes sense.

Maintenance and Weather Considerations

Figure out what works for your situation! I love wreaths, but I cannot put them up! Each time I’ve done so, a bat tries to make a home! While it leads to some pretty funny Ring videos, it scares the heck out of us every time we open the door.

Whether or not your porch is covered should be considered when determining what materials and items you have out on your porch.

Pillows and soft layering rugs might not withstand the elements well on an uncovered porch, and it’s better to use easy to wash and wipe items (like plastic pumpkins and faux plants).

When you have a covered porch, you have a greater range of what you can do to liven up your front porch this fall.

Bringing It All Together

Creating beautiful simple fall porch decor is all about layering seasonal elements that reflect your personal style while celebrating the beauty of autumn. Start with one or two foundational changes, like a new doormat and some throw pillows. Then gradually add natural elements like pumpkins and mums.

A good rule of thumb to remember is that beautiful creations often follow the principle of odd numbers and varying heights.

Group items in threes or fives, and create visual interest by placing tall elements next to shorter ones. Also, don't feel pressured to fill every inch of space; sometimes the best displays are those with thoughtful editing and breathing room.
