Your 22 Simple & Fun May Party Theme Ideas to Host the Perfect Spring Gathering
I can almost feel the warm sun beating down on my face as I write this in March. I’m very excited that the weather is starting to turn, and I can now start planning to host friends outside. With the weather finally cooperating, and my strong desire to open the windows and celebrate the end of winter, I’ve researched and scoured Pinterest to find fun spring-loving May party theme list ideas that are perfect for any event big or small. Some are inspired by wedding showers and holidays; you can bring these to life with your flair to entertain your friends.

I haven’t themed a party since my kids were younger, and I made papier-mâché dinosaur eggs for all of the kids to take home and break open as a goody bag, but I’m feeling the vibes this year!
The May Party Theme List
The ultimate goal of this list is to provide you with ample ways to put a focus on your gathering and take the stress out of thinking about what type of party to have.
Having a theme is a fun way to channel your hosting energies into a cute vignette and make planning easier by having a focus.
Below, this list is broken down into early, middle, and the end of May, but that doesn’t mean you have to follow it that way. If you love an idea (and I hope you do), use it whenever you want. You don’t even need it to be in May!
How to Plan a Theme
If you’re trying to keep it fun by theming your next get-together, keep in mind the seasons, the holidays around the day of the party, and even the National Day Calendar. Honestly, I don’t know if the National Day of “fill in whatever you want here” is a real thing, but it’s a real way to have a fun time!
When inviting your guests, share with them the theme, so they can participate. It doesn’t have to be mandatory, but letting everyone know ahead of time gives them the chance to join in on the fun.

The 22 May Party Theme List
Early May: Keeping it Festive
From Cinco de Mayo to the Kentucky Derby, there are a bunch of ways to theme your gathering. Some of the ideas are great as stand-alones while others can be layered together to create a fun event for everyone to love.
- “Nacho-Average” Fiesta: With Cinco de Mayo this month, having a specialized taco and nacho bar is inexpensive and fun! You can go to the dollar store and grab plates in red, white, and green! If you’re a fan of Mexican food, you’re going to love this day of celebration.
- Margarita Mixology Night: Still in the Mexican holiday spirit, put out some tortilla chips and dips, and get creative with margarita concoctions. Pinterest will offer so many recipes that you can try.
- Hats & Horses Garden Party: The first Saturday in May is always the Kentucky Derby. Why not ask your friends to wear fun hats and eat brunch together with a “best hat” contest.
- Mint Julep Social: A mint julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, so why not make an afternoon centered on the classic Derby cocktail and southern appetizers? Your guests can still wear their Derby hats while sipping these bourbon-loving cocktails.
- May Day Flower Crown Workshop: Celebrate the halfway point between spring and summer with a crown because you’re a queen! Grab a bunch of girlfriends and have each bring a type of flower, and you supply the wine! Watch a YouTube video like this one to learn how to build your crowns.
- Petals & Prosecco: This is a gorgeous bridal theme, but I don’t think it should be limited to that! Spring is all about gorgeous budding flowers. Why not host friends and decorate with beautiful flowers while offering prosecco? Better yet, create a prosecco bar with different mixers and have your guests make their favorite beverage. Maybe my strawberry vodka prosecco drink will become your crowd’s favorite!

Mid-May: Party in Full Bloom
- Peony Premiere: I have a real love-hate relationship with my peonies. I am in love with them when they bloom, and a theme that celebrates one of the prettiest flowers God ever created is a theme I can get on board with. But I hate that they bloom for only a few weeks. Sharing their beauty with your loved ones is a fabulous idea.
- The Secret Garden Tea: It’s a perfect time to host a traditional high tea that can be served outdoors. You can use your finest china or go to a local thrift store and grab some beautiful mismatched plates and teacups for the day. Serve small tea cakes and sandwiches. This is a great theme for kids to participate in!
- Spring Awakening Dinner: Set a classy dinner vibe with a multi-course “white-tablecloth” meal featuring appetizers and entrees prepared to highlight spring greens and herbs. Pinterest has tons of recipes to inspire your menu!
- Mom’s Night “In”: Get your girls together for a pre-Mother’s Day gathering. This is a perfect time to pull out all of the old photo albums and laugh the night away.
- Rosé All Day Soirée: Dedicate a day to rosé. Serve the pretty pink wine with appetizers for an afternoon gathering.
- The “Main Squeeze” Brunch: I love brunch! It’s an easy event to host if you follow these tips. Set up a mimosa bar for your guests to make their own drinks if they choose.

Late May: So Close to Summer
- Memorial Day BBQ: Nothing screams summer is coming like a BBQ. Get yours going with the classics: hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixin’s. Learn more about planning a bbq here: The Ultimate BBQ Guide: Things Needed for a BBQ.
- Seafood Boil: If you’re a fan of seafood, this is a great option. Get your biggest pot and create a moment your guests will never forget. Many love the “dump-on-the-table” feast that’s as messy as it is fun!
- An “Al Fresco” Sunset: Invite over a few of your closest friends and set a long table. Keep it casual while enjoying the sunset outside. Looking to learn the ins and outs of hosting a dinner party? Check out my post How to Plan a Dinner Party: A Step-by-Step Guide for Stress-Free Entertaining.
- S’mores & Starlight: Create a s’mores board with a variety of sweets. From the typical graham cracker to some cookies, then marshmallows (try to find different types), your traditional Hershey’s chocolate bar. Then, gather around the fire pit and get toasting!

May Whimsy
- Outdoor Movie Premiere: Set up a projector and create a concession stand area outside. Have friends bring blankets or supply some and let everyone chill on the grass while watching movies. Another great idea is using pool floats or borrowing a bunch of inflatable beds to make it cozy.
- The Modern Picnic: Keeping with the blankets, having a picnic-style party is a fun theme. Display your food with picnic baskets and have frisbees ready to go.
Hostess-Focused & Specialized Themes
- The Charcuterie Challenge: I’ve seen videos of people doing this, and it looks fun. Plan a potluck party with the caveat that everyone has to bring a themed food board. For example, someone can create a candy board, another can create a breakfast board. You can also theme the boards by color. Depending on the color you get, you need to keep all items within that color block.
- Berry Sweet Celebration: From berry cocktails to berry desserts, celebrate your strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, etc. with different ways to honor the newly produced fruit.
- Coastal Craving: A pre-summer beach-themed party with seafood and tropical cocktails.
- Farmers’ Market Feast: I’m not sure if I would take this idea on because I like a plan, but for the adventurous soul, this might be a fun challenge! Have a dinner party where your menu is decided entirely by what’s available at the market that day.

Things to Consider
When deciding on a theme, consider how deep you want to go on a theme and how much of your budget you want to put towards decorations. Can you get creative? What can you use to keep costs down?
- Use base plates of the same color. My white collection works well to incorporate in many themes.
- Repurpose where you can. Can you start saving wine bottles, take the label off, and clean them, then repurpose them to contain mixers for your bar?
- Visit the dollar store. What can you get inexpensively to help create a festive atmosphere?
- Pinterest is your friend. Search for inspiration from decor to what you serve.
- How many people do you want to host? Theming an intimate gathering is just as fun as for a big party.
