To me, this beverage is synonymous with cold weather and curling up, but I love to offer it as an option for those who want to sip on something classic. It isn’t that difficult to make, but it wows everyone who’s offered one.

This post is all about how to make a maple bourbon old fashioned now.

How to Make an Old Fashioned at Home

Whether it’s just for you or for a party, what I love about this drink is its simplicity. With only a handful of ingredients, you can create this delicious classic—and a classic it is! I did a quick search to find out the history of this drink for this post. To summarize, the history stems from similar drinks in England, and America brought its love of whiskey to it. You can learn more here.

Yes, an old fashioned can be made with whiskey or bourbon.

How to make an old fashioned with Bourbon:

The ingredients of an old fashioned are simple:

  • 2 ounces of your favorite bourbon
  • Angostura bitters
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • Orange peel
  • Luxardo cherries

You can use a shaker or you can blend everything into a glass if you prefer. The large ice cube helps to slow the melting of the ice into the drink.

Though there is nothing quite as elegant as one large ice cube sitting in your drink, you don’t have to go out and buy a mold (unless you want to). Learn more about which type of ice cube to use in your beverages here.

Want to buy a large cube ice tray? This is the one I use.

Pour your bourbon and maple syrup into a shaker that’s filled with ice. Then, add a few dashes of Angostura bitters (a mix of gentian, spices, and herbs). Shake well.

Pour your mixture into your serving glass over ice. Take your orange and, using a peeler or a paring knife, gently peel the orange’s surface while trying not to grab the pith.

Using your fingers, gently roll the orange peel around the rim of the glass to extract the oils and scent the rim. Then, toss the peel into the glass. Add two Luxardo cherries (and, if you have a sweet tooth like I do, let some of that syrup drip in, too).

Voilà, you have a classic beverage that you can serve at your next event.
