What makes the Moscow Mule so great?

A Moscow mule is a favorite with my family. It’s the perfect cocktail to add to any hostessing menu: it’s delicious and isn’t complicated. You can make it with as little as three ingredients which means you can spend more time socializing and less time bartending.

It’s also completely anecdotal to say, but I never feel terrible the next day! I’m betting it has to do with the ginger beer.

Nowadays, you’re not only limited to vodka (which is celebrated by the incorporation of Moscow in the title), but you can add practically any liquor and change the flavor to your liking.

Here are a few different types of mule drinks:

  1. Kentucky Mule – substitute bourbon for the vodka in the recipe
  2. The Dark ‘n Stormy- use dark rum instead of  vodka
  3. Mexican Mule– substitute tequila instead of vodka
  4. Irish Mule- substitute whiskey for the vodka

What makes this one of my go-to drinks for parties is that it’s super simple to make and only consists of three ingredients!

Ingredients of a Moscow Mule:

  • Vodka
  • Ginger Beer (diet or regular- the women in my family prefer diet, the guys prefer regular)
  • Limes (you will squeeze the juice of the limes)

Do you need a copper mug for a mule?

The reality is that you don’t. You can use any glass that you want. Some say that the copper offers more flavor, but others disagree. Most agree that the copper maintains the temperature thus keeping the vodka that perfectly cold temperature that makes it oh so good.

There is no reason to run out and grab the copper mugs if you don’t have them, though. You can repurpose a wine glass, fill a pint glass, and, dare I say, if you’re in a bind, a red plastic cup!

How can you get creative with a mule?

I love seeing the different mule options when I go out to eat. Adding fresh, muddled berries is a go to for some. You can try muddling strawberries or blackberries and see if you like that addition.

Can you use pre-packaged lime juice?

I don’t think it is anywhere near as good. Fresh limes are too difficult to imitate. If you know of a brand that can do the job, let me know!I don’t think it is anywhere near as good. Fresh limes are too difficult to imitate. If you know of a brand that can do the job, let me know!

Does Ginger Beer have alcohol in it?

I have never seen any that do. For the most part, ginger beer has no alcohol, but I do believe it can be made with alcohol, so make sure you check!
