Learn How to Clean Your Bedroom for Best Results

Instead of stressing out about the task, learn how to clean your bedroom for results like a professional.

Bedroom

My bedroom is one of my favorite spaces in my home. It’s the space I go to when I want to get super cozy and be alone, and it’s also the space where I cuddle up with my kids. I believe it’s one of the most occupied rooms in our house. With all that time spent there, it is also one of the fastest to get dirty!

This post will provide information on how to do a bedroom deep clean, so you can keep it clean for your cozy time.

How to Clean Your Bedroom

It sounds like a simple enough task, right?

Yet, it can be overwhelming because after a busy week, the last thing you want to do is spend time cleaning! However, if you follow the weekly practices I have in place, you will make your life much easier, and the task won’t feel so overwhelming.

The first step is NEVER to let it get out of hand. Trust me on this one! When you ignore the reality that you need to keep your room clean for too long, it becomes too overwhelming.

The mess grows both in your room and in your mind, making it a bigger task that you’re going to want to avoid. Keeping your space neat eliminates the need for a huge overhaul.

Create homes for your items, so you know where to look for anything you need. If you have a home for the items in your bedroom, you’re more likely to put it back in its spot. This will naturally help create a neat space, making the big clean easier. Try having containers to keep your space neat.

How to Clean Your Bedroom Fast

Always make your bed. I’m a bit of a nut about this one, and I’m not the only one. Heck, more people preach the value of making your bed and its benefits with your overall outlook on what you can achieve in a day.

But, it’s not only that. Your bed is a large visual when you walk into a room. If you have it looking clean and neat, your whole space already feels like it’s clean.

Put away your clothes as soon as they are cleaned. And, have a place to put your dirty clothes nearby. Half of any cluttered or dirty bedroom I’ve seen is simply that clothes have not been properly placed. By taking care of this, you have won half of the battle!

Keep in mind that if you take care of this as the clothes are cleaned, it is NOT as overwhelming of a task. By putting away your clean clothes after every load, you take the task down to only a couple of minutes each time.

Make it a rule that you will do a quick straightening up before you go to bed. I take a few minutes each night to tidy up my room (put items back in their spots, put laundry away, etc). It helps calm the mind and also keep things in control before it can get out of hand.

Bedroom Cleaning Hacks

By always keeping your space tidy, you’ve already accomplished your number one hack.

Have more than one set of sheets: By being able to switch the sheets on your bed without having to wait on the washer and dryer, you’re more likely to make a habit of it. The job doesn’t feel so time-consuming.

Have supplies already in the room: Keep a small container filled with the proper supplies in your room or close to it. This helps with the mental hurdle of having to start.

Electric vacuums: time is precious, and it’s better spent cuddling up in your bedroom with loved ones than cleaning, so why not try to reduce your time by getting help with the load? What could take long with a broom becomes only a few minutes with a vacuum.

Deep Cleaning Bedroom Checklist

Now that you’ve got your regular cleaning plan ready, it’s time to discover a deep cleaning plan. This needs to be done every few months or so. A deep cleaning of a bedroom requires a systematic approach to ensure every area is thoroughly cleaned. Here’s a comprehensive method to deep clean your bedroom:

Preparation and Decluttering

If you don’t already have the supplies in your room, start by preparing your cleaning supplies and decluttering the space.

Here are the Essential Cleaning Tools

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Glass cleaner
  • Disinfectant spray
  • Baking soda
  • Duster (feather or other)
  • Wood spray (if applicable)
  • Wood floor cleaner (if applicable)
  • Mop (if applicable)

Declutter: Before you get into the deep cleaning, take time to get rid of everything that serves no purpose anymore. We all have a little hoarding desire from time to time, but you will be so much happier in your bedroom when it isn’t taken over by clutter.

If you haven’t needed it in months, you won’t need it!

This is a good time to go through your clothing, determine what needs to be donated, and bag it for donations if you are doing a full deep clean refresh.

Bedding and Mattress

As I said above, your bed is a HUGE visual in your room (and the best part of your room). Take care of it.

  • Strip all bedding and wash sheets in hot water (your washer should have a bedding setting).
  • Lightly sprinkle baking soda on the mattress and let it sit for 15-30 minutes to deodorize; be careful not to go too heavy.
  • Vacuum the mattress thoroughly, using an upholstery attachment.
  • Make the bed with newly cleaned sheets
  • BONUS– You should clean your comforter and pillows, but these will take time. Account for this.

Dusting

Wiping down all surfaces with the proper cleaning materials will help make your room look clean and smell better. Work from top to bottom to prevent re-depositing dust.

What to dust:

  • Upper molding, ceiling lights/fans
  • Above window frames and window frames
  • Pictures
  • Furniture surfaces and electronics
  • Lower moldings
  • Baseboard and vents  (if you can, try taking the front of the baseboards off and vacuum those clean)
  • Wipe up under the baseboards

What to use:

  • Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth
  • Move slowly to effectively capture dust

Deep Cleaning Additional Steps

Depending on how deep you’re willing to go, you can really take the time do do every area. If you choose to include steps like cleaning windows, determine whether you want to take the screens out and give them a good scrubbing in the bathtub or outside (depending on the weather).

Here are other areas that benefit from a deep clean:

  • Clean windows and mirrors
  • Wipe down and disinfect door handles, light switches, and remotes
  • Vacuum, wash, or beat rugs
  • Mop or clean floors, paying special attention under the bed
  • Re-organize your closet and vacuum/wipe down the floors
  • Wipe down walls

Additional Information on How to Clean a Bedroom

Open your windows! There is nothing better for a room than letting natural light and air permeate the room.

Like I said, declutter when you can. Designate time to go through your drawers. Clutter has a habit of growing before we know it. Go through drawers of clothing and nightstands to see what you need and have. You have no idea how many times I found a top that I forgot about when doing this!

Remember, make a daily, weekly, and monthly routine that has systems in place so that you are not overwhelmed by the task.
